Bill Levitt Fellowship ~ Levitt's Civic Leaders

We are now interviewing for the 2011/2012 winter fellowship, contact Jen Clancy if interested at jclancy@friendsofalta.org.

Bill Levitt served as the Mayor of the Town of Alta for 34 years from 1972 to 2006 - the longest serving Mayor in Utah's history. His record of public service and involvement on numerous committees and initiatives is outstanding by any standard. One of Bill's most prized recognitions was in 2004 when he was named a Giraffe by the Giraffe Heroes Project, an international nonprofit organization that honors those who "stick their neck out for the common good." Bill was honored for his work in protecting the natural environment of the community of Alta and the surrounding canyon. This fellowship program is both a tribute to Bill’s public service record and an effort to train young people in the tradition of intelligence and integrity which Bill personified.

Bill, his wife Mimi, and friend Pat Shea founded the Friends of Alta (originally The Alta Defense Fund) in 1981. Bill’s long standing advisory role with Friends of Alta helped guide the organization to protect the environment of Alta, while still allowing supportive economic activity such as skiing, hiking and recreating in and around Alta. This LCL fellowship is an opportunity for selected individuals to work with our Executive Director for three to six months. The fellowship will focus on how Bill’s standards of excellence, intelligence and integrity in public process, and Friends of Alta’s conservation efforts can work together to protect Alta's environment, history and state of mind.  Each fellowship opportunity will be unique and is open to students or individuals wishing to further their knowledge and experience in conservation, local government and dynamic communities.

The individuals selected will be part of a small non-profit organization dedicated to sustainable environmental practices.  Levitt’s Civic Leaders will be given a defined list of tasks to complete during the course of the fellowship, which will vary depending upon the time of year and where assistance is needed most. On certain occasions the fellowship task list may be flexible enough to give participants the ability to be creative and provide a service they see worthwhile and beneficial to Friends of Alta. The fellowship is a great opportunity to develop skills needed in the work place while providing a public service to a local Utah non-profit in a unique mountain environment.

Fellowship tasks may involve the following:

* Conservation Easement Program

* Environmental Studies

* Event Planning

* Community Outreach Projects

* Research on various community wide initiatives
