From the Former Mayor of Alta

William H. Levitt

After living 50 years in Alta (34 of them as Mayor) I still remember with a sense of awe my early impression of Alta and the Albion Basin. This incredible area, often called "The Gem of the Wasatch Mountain Range", has changed very little during these many years. Its pristine beauty, myriad of wildflowers, lush wetlands, crystal streams, variety of mountain wildlife, and awesome mountain peaks remain familiar to the thousands of people who have visited this uniquely beautiful place. It is no accident that when people refer to Alta as their "spiritual home", it is Albion Basin that is foremost in their minds.

Albion Basin is not only beautiful but is also a recharge area of a critical watershed for the Salt Lake Valley (20% of the Valley's water generates in Albion Basin). It has always been the mission of the Town of Alta - the Mayor and the Town Council, to be the guardians of this most precious watershed. Each year, young people from all over our country come to study this incredible environment. Alta's magic has reached the minds of many generations. The care, concern and active assistance of the Friends of Alta (and many others) are the true assurance that Alta and its Albion Basin will remain an inspiration for all fortunate enough to visit it and enjoy its great beauty.
