Land conservation is a key element in Friends of Alta's mission statement, and our first priority. Our goals in land conservation are to (1) help protect the Little Cottonwood Canyon watershed [www.keepitpure.com]. (2) help protect vital wildlife habitat areas, particularly its wetland and riparian areas; and (3) help protect the natural beauty and open space of Alta. Our land conservation goals also support the conservation goals of the Town of Alta, Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities, and the U.S. Forest Service.

Most of our land conservation efforts are focused in the Albion Basin because of the Albion Basin's important watershed and ecological values. Beginning in the early 1990's, Friends of Alta began purchasing undeveloped lots in the Albion Basin for conservation purposes. We continue to work with landowners in the Albion Basin, and to date, have acquired 20 undeveloped lots from private landowners. In 2003, Friends of Alta partnered with Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities and the Utah Mitigation Commission to provide further long term protection to these lands in the form of conservation easements.
