Pikas are small mammals that are related to the rabbit, but have short rounded ears and short limbs. They live on rocky mountainsides, where there are numerous crevices in which to shelter. Pikas require cold temperatures to survive, which is why some species of pika can survive up to 20,000 feet in elevation! In Albion Basin, you can hear pikas sing and talk to each other but they can be difficult to spot, considering their size, they generally weigh less than one pound. During the summer, pikas gather vegetation to store in their shelters for the wintertime, since they do not hibernate.
